Ferrari 250 GTO - 3909GT
This Ferrari 250GTO is part of a very special and extremely limited collection of models, celebrating each of the Ferrari 250 GTO Series 1 cars that were produced. Each individual chassis has been recreated at 1:8 scale in a limited run of just 5 pieces in each specification.
3909GT left the factory on September 10th 1962, painted in grigio metallizzato, a metallic grey. Sold to the Switzerland-based Scuderia Filipinetti team, 3909GT’s first true owner was Swiss racing driver Edgar Berney, who swiftly entered it in the Tour de France alongside co-driver Jean Gretener. Though the duo failed to see the chequered flag after encountering mechanical troubles, less than a fortnight later the pair entered the Coupe du Salon Montlhery, where they finished first in class. Further success followed months later at the 1963 Journée Eaux Mortes where, driven by Berney’s compatriot Heinz Schiller, 3909GT again finished first in class. Swiss racing legend Jo Siffert took the wheel next, alongside fellow race driver Herbert Müller, racing in the 500km de Spa and finishing third overall. The next weekend, Heini Walter and Herbert Mueller raced together in the 1000km Nürburgring, though the engine encountered problems due to a malfunctioning connecting rod so the duo failed to finish. 3909GT competed in hillclimbs during the summer months, as Berney piloted the car to a second in class finish at Ollon-Villars and a sixth place overall finish at Chamrousse, whilst Jean-Jacques Thuner drove to victory at the Verbois Hillclimb. Berney and Gretener paired up again for the 1963 Tour de France but failed to finish, again facing mechanical issues. 3909GT’s final race for the Scuderia Filipinetti team saw a podium finish as Charles Müller finished third at the Coppa AMAG at Monza.
Towards the end of 1963, the 250GTO was acquired by French sports car driver Claude Bourillot. His debut race behind the wheel of his new car saw a victory at the 1964 Rallye Bourgogne. Though not racing as frequently, the 3909GT saw continued success: a third in class finished at the Targa Florio, alongside co-driver Prince Michel de Bourbon Parme, was followed by a second in class finish at the Urcy Hillclimb. 3909 returned to Edgar Berney to have another attempt at the 1964 Tour de France, though this time mechanical failure struck before the start and Berney failed to even start the race. He seemed destined that he would remain unable to finish the Tour. Bourillot retained his crown at the 1965 Rallye Bourgogne but failed to improve on the previous year’s Targa Florio result due to an accident. A return to the Urcy Hillclimb saw 3909 match its previous second in class result and its final race with Bourillot at the wheel was the 1966 Rallye Bourgogne, where it finished second overall.
In mid-1966, Bourillot sold the 250GTO to compatriot Andre Aknin, who raced in a few hillclimb events, achieving a win at Chamrousse and a second place at Mont Ventoux, before selling the car on himself. 3909 passed through several owners before it was acquired by the Harrison brothers in 1972. The brothers would go on to sell it for GBP 10 million to a Japanese collector in fifteen years later, making it the most expensive car sold at the time. After passing through more hands in the UK and US, it was bought by the current owner, American John Mozart in 2000.
This perfect 1:8 scale model of the Ferrari 250GTO 3909GT Chassis has been handcrafted and finished in our workshops with the co-operation and assistance of the manufacturer regarding original finishes, materials, archive imagery and drawings. The use of original CAD and supremely accurate digital scanning of the original car has allowed us to perfectly recreate every detail at scale. Furthermore, the prototype model has undergone detailed scrutiny by the manufacturer’s engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation.
