Amid huge strides being taken in Formula One aerodynamics, particularly by Lotus, Ferrari saw the need to up the ante. The 312T4, first raced at the 1979 South African Grand Prix was Ferrari’s first ground effect Formula One car. Based heavily on the previous 312T3, the T4 was, in some respects, a compromise, given that the T series of cars had not been designed with ground effects in mind. The T4 monocoque was designed to be as narrow as possible to maximise ground effects, but was limited by the width of the flat 12 engine.*The T4 proved to be very reliable, winning six races in that season, three each for Works drivers Villeneuve and Scheckter. Consistent point scoring led to Ferrari to winning its fourth Constructors’ Championship in five seasons and Scheckter his only Drivers’ Championship. This was the last Ferrari to take the World Championship until Michael Schmacher’s reign of supremacy began some three decades later.*This model is of Gilles Villeneuve’s car.
