The Bentley Blower is, for many, the iconic racing Bentley of the pre-war years. Ironically, the 4 ½ Litre Supercharged was the least successful of all the Cricklewood Bentleys in competition – and founder W.O. Bentley bitterly opposed its development. W.O. believed a supercharger would ‘pervert the engine’s design and corrupt its performance’ but Sir Henry (Tim) Birkin, one of the Bentley Boys, convinced Chairman Woolf Barnato to overrule W.O. and approve the project. Only 55 of the 720 Bentley 4½ litres ever produced between 1927 and 1931 were Blowers. A Bentley Blower won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1928, beating a Stutz Model BB Blackhawk by a single lap, but many consider the Blower’s finest hour to have come in the 1930 French Grand Prix at Pau. Amid a field of Bugatti Grand Prix cars, Birkin wrestled the huge Bentley to a heroic second place in what was almost certainly the heaviest car ever entered in a grand prix, at over 2 tonnes.

This model is a perfect scale replica of the No. 9 Bentley 4½ litre which won the 3-5L Class in the 1929 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Driven by British duo Glen Kidston and Jack Dunfee, the 4.4L S4 powered racing car finished only seven laps behind the overall winning Bentley Speed Six, which was in the category above. Kidston and Dunfee finished eight and ten laps ahead of the third and fourth places respectively, both of which were also Bentley Blowers, setting a new class distance record in the process. The race was the most dominant display by a single manufacturer in the short history of the race and would not be matched until 1957 by Jaguar.
