Jaguar XKD 1957 Le Mans
The Jaguar D-Type was produced between 1954 and 1957. Although it shares the same basic straight 6 XK engine and many mechanic components as its elder sister, the C Type, it was structurally entirely different. The aviation industry inspired monocoque construction and aerodynamic efficiency was a marked departure from the C-Type’s space frame chassis and softer body design. *Whilst the D-Type was developed to win Le Mans, the Works team’s final year with the hugely successful D-Type at the La Sarthe track was in 1956, where it won the race outright. However, 1957 proved to be another glory year for the D-Type, with the British legend claiming first, second and third place through its privateer teams. This winning car, in its iconic Ecurie Ecosse livery, was driven by racing supremos Ron Flockhart and Ivor Bueb. This 1957 win heralded a hat trick for the Coventry marque, winning the fabled French race three times in a row in 1955, 1956 and 1957 respectively.
