The Lotus 38, designed by Colin Chapman and Len Terry is famed for various reasons. Perhaps most importantly, it was the first mid-engined car to win the Indianapolis 500, driven by Jim Clark, proving that mid-engined cars could dominate at The Brickyard, and that the rule of the front-engined roadsters was effectively dead.*This model is of the Indy 500-winning car, which provided Clark with the opportunity to be the first non-American winner of the race since 1916. The victory also gave him the distinction of being the only driver in history to win the Indy 500 and the Formula One World Championship in the same year. Clark dominated, leading all but ten laps of the race.*The 38 was a reinvention of the previous Lotus 29 and 34 Indianapolis designs, but this time with a full monocoque tub chassis. A total of eight Lotus 38s were built. They were powered by the same four-cam Ford V8 fuel injected engine that was used in the 34, providing around 500 brake horsepower.

This fine 1:8 scale model of the Lotus 38 has been handcrafted and finished in our workshops with the co-operation and assistance of Lotus regarding original finishes, materials, archive imagery and drawings. The use of supremely accurate digital scanning of the original car has allowed us to perfectly recreate every detail at scale. Furthermore, it has undergone detailed scrutiny by both engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation.
