- Scale guide
Soon after the launch of McLaren’s iconic F1 supercar, the BPR Global GT Series was created and several teams, seeing the racing potential in the F1 road cars, approached then McLaren supremo, Gordon Murray, to try to convince him to create a racing version. After much persuasion, Murray agreed to produce nine chassis, some in time for the 1995 edition of Le Mans. As the F1 was based directly on McLaren’s racing experience, little in the way of track modifications needed to be carried out.*This model is of the car sponsored by Harrods, at the time under the ownership of businessman Mohammad Al-Fayed. Al Feyed’s nephew, Moody, made a business case for promoting the store through motorsport, and therefore the F1 was acquired and entered for Le Mans under the Mach One Racing banner. The beginning of a great few seasons of racing for chassis 6R, Le Mans saw the car finish in a very credible third position with the capable hands of Andy Wallace, Derek Bell and his son Justin Bell at the wheel.
