Technical Developments
Following the introduction of Formula 1’s new regulations, McLaren began development of its 2026 challenger as early as 2024, drawing inspiration from the championship‑winning MCL38 and MCL39 while responding to the sweeping changes brought about by the sport’s shift towards electrification. Central to this evolution was the car’s power unit, where the removal of the MGU‑H from the 1.6‑litre V6 turbo engine placed sole responsibility for energy recovery on the MGU‑K, delivering a threefold increase in electrical output compared to its previous specification.
A Bold New Chassis
The reimagining of the chassis was central in the creation of the MCL40, designing a car both narrower and lighter to significantly improve aerodynamics. Additional developments included removing ground-effect tunnels in favour of flatter floors and extended diffusers with large openings, as well as the inclusion of newly adjustable front and rear wings, showcasing a more streamlined design. Featuring the same striking papaya colour scheme as seen on the victorious MCL39 from 2025, the MCL40’s bold livery upholds McLaren’s tradition of extending a winning identity into the new season, complemented with accents of anthracite and contrasting teal.
Note: This is a 'Kerbside' model and does not feature any moving parts.
