The McLaren M8D was developed by the team for the 1970 Can-Am season. A natural progression in the M8 series, the M8D was nevertheless different in some vital areas. New rules in the sport had banned the strut-mounted rear wings that were so popular in 1969 and, as a consequence, the height of the rear wing had to be lowered significantly. To make up for the loss in downforce, the Chevrolet engine built by Bolthoff was enhanced through some new silicon-aluminium blocks amongst other improvements, producing an increased brake horsepower.

The ‘Batmobile’ as it became known, was driven by McLaren founder Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme and gave the team one of its best point-scoring years in Can-Am. However, Bruce McLaren tragically lost his life driving a ‘Batmobile’ at Goodwood early in the season. Winning nine wins out of ten rounds, Denny Hulme took the drivers’ title, heaping honour on Bruce McLaren and the M8D in the process.

This fine 1:8 scale model of the McLaren M8D has been handcrafted and finished in our workshops with the co-operation and assistance of McLaren regarding original finishes, materials, archive imagery and drawings. The use of supremely accurate digital scanning of the original car has allowed us to perfectly recreate every detail at scale. Furthermore, it has undergone detailed scrutiny by both engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation.

Every Amalgam 1:8 scale model is supplied in a luxury black presentation box and mounted on a carbon fibre or leather base protected by a clear acrylic dust cover.  The model title, original branding and edition number are displayed on polished stainless steel plaques mounted at the front end of the base.
