Pagani Huayra Carbon Edition (2012)

Contact us

Named after the South American wind god Huayra-Tata, the 2011 Pagani Huayra was the successor to the almighty Zonda and Pagani’s second supercar. Taking advantage of their carbon fibre expertise learnings from the Zonda R, alongside their revised artisanal production process, Pagani created the Huarya, initially dubbed the C9. The car followed the marque’s core concept of the fusion of art and science, with styling cues straight from its successor, such as the continued inclusion of the gullwing door, and an alternative construction type involving the extensive use of an innovative material known as Carbotanium throughout the chassis and suspension. The components of carbotanium; carbon fiber and titanium, are woven together to form a strong, light material that can withstand significant amounts of heat and strain, taking the very strongest elements of both materials. The starting base price for this work of art was in excess of $1 million, before options.

The Huayra featured a brand-new engine developed exclusively for Pagani by Mercedes-Benz AMG, the Mercedes-AMG V12 Bi-Turbo M158. The twin turbocharged engine could produce a massive 700 horsepower and 730 ft∙lb (989.7 N∙m) of torque, with all that power being sent to the rear wheels via an X-trac seven-speed sequential transmission. This engine allowed the Huayra to reach 0-60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in 3.3 seconds and 100 mph (0-161 km/h) in only 6.4 seconds, while enabling the car to reach a remarkable top speed of 224 mph (360 kph). The car’s titanium exhaust system, engineered by MHG-Fahrzeugtechnik, was the result of a direct application of racing technologies on a high-performance road car and resulted in a more reliable yet lighter system. Unlike the Zonda, the Huayra possessed active aerodynamics, keeping the car stable in highs speed corners, whilst the front and rear flaps also act as air brakes to assist the large carbon ceramic brake discs.

The core concept of the car centred around its namesake Huayra-Tata, the ancient Andean mountain god who commanded the breezes, winds and blizzards, and the eternity of the element air. Infused into the car’s very DNA, the Huayra reflects the infamous vison and meticulous attention to detail of Horacio Pagani, from the perfect alignment of the striped carbon fibre weave down to the elliptical shape of the mirror housing. This elemental motif reaches its peak when admiring the car’s elegantly bowed carbon stalks, designed to reflect the wings of a gull in flight, and, when paired with the car’s gullwing doors, emphasises Pagani’s ability to find and incorporate the subtle nuances and correlations between shapes. The most controversial design aspect of the Huayra has always been its wing mirrors, both adored and loathed as they extend 20mm beyond the widest point of the already two metre wide car, but they clearly reflect the car’s form language.

Each Huarya is hand-built by a small team at Pagani Headquarters in Italy, with other 4000 components present, not including the AMG engine and gearbox. One of the most intriguing aspects about Huayra is the car’s key, worth £3,700 on its own, and made into the shape of the actual car. The aluminium key has the same shape as the body work of the car and can be split into two, one side revealing the car key and the other side a USB drive. Due to the Pagani’s initial agreement with AMG, only 100 Huayras were ever built.

This fine 1:8 scale model is of the Pagani Huayra Carbon Edition, unveiled in 2012, alongside the White Edition. It features a full carbon fibre body, wheels and interior trim, a $150,000+ option on the original car. The interior features red leather upholstery and carbon fibre inserts. It has been handcrafted and finished in our workshops using detailed colour and material specifications, and original CAD data supplied directly from Pagani Automobili. Furthermore, it has undergone detailed scrutiny by both engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation.
